This morning I was listening to a man who was expounding on a passage of Isaiah, where God said through the prophet “Ask of me sign”.
IS 7:10-14 The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!
But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!”
Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign:
the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us!”
In that passage, the man says, “I won’t tempt God”.
And that sounds very pious. But what he was really saying is, ” I don’t want to see anything bigger – i only have faith for what i can see” …his soul wasn’t large enough to see God move. And so he drew back.
And the prophet says to the king, “Isn’t it enough to weary a man, must you also weary God?”
God is weary from small souls and small minds that keep Him locked in a building instead of living through our lives. He mourns for those who miss him, because they limit him to an hour on Sunday…
What big dream would God give us, if we simply believed …and asked.
Yes – It is a wonderful sign :0) God with us! perhaps that is what this “time apart” is giving us opportunity to discover. Whether it is something as unreachable to us as we can think – from a deep world which we can only imagine to the top of the sky – there is no place where God is not. And, the sign is perfect – why look so far off when He is right here – not only among us – but within :0)
Thanks Jim
This enforced time alone – is will hopefully cause people to re-evaluate habits and assumptions about their faith or the spiritual side of things – and interestingly enough – again hopefully not in a finger pointing kind of way as we are all in the same boat – this boat – it’s the only boat – we have all been in it all along – we are just starting to realize it more :0)
